- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2024LOVE IT!! Excellent record quality, and love the Tune-Yards' sound!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2012I like Genre Mashing... this is more like genre smashing though. Instead of being able to hear distinctive parts of different styles of music, what you hear is tidbits and fragments which are then melded together to create a sort of jazzy/reggee/rock/folk mix.
The beauty of this album is that it really gets better with each listen. I think this is due to the complexity of the music, and that you just can't get it all in one listen. There were 3 songs I liked on the first listen (especially Powa). Well now I like 8/10 songs and I'm not sure that Powa is still my favorite, and that's a good thing.
Musically this album is diverse. Gangsta is quite Regge, Powa has adriving rock/soul flavor, while Wooly Wolly Gong sounds like a lullably. There are so many different sounds pieced together that I really suggest listening to the Album with a solid set of headphones. It sounds so much better in my Shure 750 DJ headphones than it does over any speakers I own.
Lyrically this album is creative. I find the lyrics to be more poetic and abstract than they appear at first listen. Take the song Powa for instance: at first listen it sounds like a sexy rock ballad, but after you start to pay attention the lines blur. Is it a sexy balld, or is it about a woman who is kind of abused by her man? Or is it about a woman who is abused by her man and likes it? I've listened to the song a number of times but can't quite figure that question out. The music says "The relationship is passionate", but the lyrics say "The relationship is absuive" These contrast between what the lyrics say and how they come accross musically is dynamic and I like that.
Is the album good at face value? Yes, but it's way better after a couple listens and after you start digging through the subtle meanings and themes being explored.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2019UPDATE:
This album plays fine on other turn tables. I have replaced my original turn table which struggled to play it, and it plays fine on new ones. I'm updating my review from 1 to 4 stars -- I think the problem was my hardware, not the pressing. However, I am docking one star because it is a touchier album; other albums played fine on the previous turn table, but this one struggled.
ORIGINAL REVIEW:
This is an amazing album. My rating has nothing to do with the music -- which is amazing -- and everything to do with the quality of the pressing I received. Unfortunately, this was one of those albums that skipped repeatedly the first time I played it. The first two songs played fine. After that, it skipped every minute or so. I made sure it was clean, but it didn't change anything. The first two songs were pretty good; the bass is expansive. The mid- and high-ranges were a little muddier than I was hoping, but I was still impressed and would have recommended it if it weren't for the skipping.
I'll reluctantly stick to other formats for now. I hope someday I can find a copy that plays well.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2012Just read Chuck Klosterman's takedown of this record in Grantland. Usually Klosterman's pretty astute but this time he completely misses why, in my opinion, this record won the Village Voice's Pazz & Jop poll for 2011. The reason is this: whokill is huge and ambitious, and though it doesn't aim for a wide audience it's the first record in a long time that is strange and dangerous and overloaded with energy and -- here's the critical point -- not aiming for a tiny fragment of an audience. Here at last is a rebuttal to all the mediocre "great" records that aim low and small and please their pre-fabricated worshipful audiences. Unlike say, the criminally overrated Bon Iver or The National or Animal Collective -- ultimately genre artists, all, some of whom are frankly purveyors of mood/elevator music -- Tuneyards isn't afraid to be messy, emotional, completely out there and willing to take the audience to new and uncomfortable places. And while Tuneyards isn't the only band with manic energy -- Arcade Fire can compete on that ground, but they're too self-consciously aiming for big tunes and big statement, achieving neither -- and not the only band willing to experiment, she's made the best you'll either love it or hate it record in a damn long time. Klosterman, I think, will be proven wrong in his assessment that this is the beginning of the end for Merrill Garbus; unlike, say, previous Pazz and Jop winner Liz Phair (Exile in Guyville), this is not the work of someone whose contribution is sadly limited to one shockingly good record. Garbus has stronger songwriting chops and a broader palate. Optimistically she's PJ Harvey in a different voice and with a potentially broader range; a less angry, but no less meaningful, Sleater-Kinney with a more optimistic bent. Not everyone will love this record but revelatory music has that effect on people.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024This band is unbelievable! Pressing is Ok too. If you like good indie music - check these guys, they are awesome, unpredictable and always interesting! Just love this record!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2013I heard Merrill Garbus (Tuneyards) on the great NPR music show "Sound Opinions. The music is adventurous, funky and totally unique. I found out that my favorite nephew independently discovered the band, and he raved about it. This is NOT music for people that like to play it safe with their music. Every time I listen, I like it more. Check out their performance on "Austin City Limits".
- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2013We first heard the band on a late night talk show, then caught them on Austin City Limits. My wife commented that they sounded like Sun Ra's Cosmic Arkestra, and sometimes, their improvisations go there. But they are full of ideas, so it is wonderfully useless to try and "pigeon hole" their style!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2016One of the best albums I've heard in a while. Merrill Garbus' voice is a gift from heaven; she has so much control and power! I've currently been listening to this album on repeat all hours of the day, 7 days a week.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best album I've bought in the last two years
There are 4 songs on this album that should be getting significant airplay -- because of the state of the music business, I think that if Merrill Garbus looked like Taylor Swift, they would be. That being said, Merrill Garbus has a fantastic voice. If I had to classify it, I'd call it "bohemian" and she has great control. Goes from very soft to very powerful in the same bar and it works well. Even the filler tracks in between the hits are very good and memorable. If I was to give any negatives to the album, I wish it had been engineered to a higher quality. The songs on this album are very polished and I think they deserve to be presented in more than an "indy" garage band fashion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good enough to marry, settle down and have kids with!
Difficult second album my arse! As if Bird-Brains was not enough of a wonderful, original, musical explosion, the follow up is even better. All sorts of loopy beats pick you up, song after song after song and leave you thankful that, while you were bouncing round the floor, someone really has opened up to you and let you into their life. Outstanding moments? There are none. It is all magnificent. What was the last album you bought that you can listen too all the way through without there being one weak moment? Thank you Ms Garbus, you can come round my house and hear my life story any time!

5.0 out of 5 stars
